Pretzel Bunnies and Pretzel Chicks
Springtime is here, the flowers are blooming, the weather is getting nicer, and Easter is this Sunday. In case you couldn’t tell, so many things are happening at once and I’m a little too excited.
Easter is easily one of my favorite holidays because I always wake up ready to go Easter egg hunting.
Okay, okay, I may not be 8 anymore, but even in my 20s, you can bet that when I’m home for Easter, it’s like I’m a kid on Christmas morning eager to open presents, but this time, I’m eager to hunt for eggs. Yes, I enjoy the challenge of the hunt, but mainly, I’m wanting all of that chocolate! It’s like you feel better when you work hard and earn that chocolate. Anyone else? No? Just me? Hey, chocolate is chocolate. #chocoholic
Since Easter is less than a week away, I decided to get a head start on consuming all of that chocolate, because, why not?! This week’s treat of the week is yet another pretzel and chocolate combo – pretzel bunnies and pretzel chicks! These bite-sized treats are all over the internet if you search them, and you can make them in various ways using colored icing, sunflower seeds, starbursts, etc. But since we’re sticking with the PLB notion of “keeping it simple,” we’ll be using chocolate melts (various colors), mini chocolate chips, and mini pretzel twists. Just chocolates and pretzels…super easy, right?
Check out the video to see how to make pretzel bunnies and pretzel chicks!
Pretzel Bunnies and Pretzel Chicks
Ingredients
For pretzel chicks:
- Mini pretzel twists
- Yellow chocolate melts
- Mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Yellow sprinkles
For pretzel bunnies:
- Mini pretzel twists
- White chocolate melts
- Pink chocolate melts
- Black chocolate melts
Equipment needed:
- Wax or parchment paper
- Spoon
- Ziploc bags
- Scissors
Instructions
To make pretzel chicks:
- Begin by heating yellow chocolate melts in a microwave safe bowl in 30 second intervals at 50% power, stirring every time until smooth.
- Lay pretzels out on wax (or parchment) paper, angling the pretzels vertical.
- Using a small spoon, drop about a teaspoon size of yellow chocolate in the center of the pretzel. Evenly spread out the yellow chocolate within the pretzel, making sure to stay inside the outer lining of the pretzel. Lift your spoon from the chocolate where the “wing” would go. This gives that peak-like texture so it actually looks like a wing!
- Sprinkle on yellow sprinkles.
- Place a mini chocolate chip upside down in the pretzel so the tip is within the yellow chocolate. His eye should be flat, gently laid above the knob for the chick’s beak.
- Melt orange chocolate melts in the microwave using the same melting method in the directions listed above.
- Scoop orange melts into the corner of a Ziploc bag, cut a small hole at the tip of the corner, and pipe on his beak, beginning on the outer knob of the pretzel and ending in the yellow chocolate about half of a quarter of an inch.
- Allow yellow chocolate to harden and set completely (could take up to an hour) or place in fridge for about 15 minutes.
- Bon appétit!
To make pretzel bunnies:
- Begin by heating white chocolate melts in a microwave safe bowl in 30 second intervals at 50% power, stirring every time until chocolate is completely melted.
- Lay pretzels out on wax (or parchment) paper.
- Using a small spoon, drop about a teaspoon size of white chocolate in the center of the pretzel. Evenly spread out the white chocolate within the pretzel, making sure to stay inside the outer lining of the pretzel. Try to make the white chocolate filling as smooth as possible. Lift your spoon up at the edge of the pretzel, trying not to create too large of a peak.
- Allow white chocolate to set.
- Melt pink chocolate melts in the microwave using the same method as earlier. Scoop pink melts into the corner of a Ziploc bag, cut the tiniest hole at the tip of the corner, and pipe on two lines, about a quarter of an inch thick, to act as the lining of the ears. Place a dot of pink chocolate in the center of the pretzel to act as the nose.
- Melt black chocolate melts in the microwave using the same method in the directions listed above. Same as the pink chocolate, transfer black chocolate melts into the corner of a Ziploc bag, trim the tiniest tip of the corner, and pipe on six tick marks to act as the whiskers. Three marks will be on either side of the nose.
- Add two dots for the eyes, about the same size of the nose.
- Allow chocolate bunnies to harden and set completely (could take up to an hour) or place in fridge for about 15 minutes.
- Bon appétit!
